Write to Answers

Are you feeling blocked in any way? If so, automatic writing may help you clear obstructions.

A friend recently reminded me that automatic writing is a good tool for making decisions or clearing blockages. Formally known as psychography, automatic writing brings forth information from your subconscious or from your Higher Self. It is commonly used as a tool by Spiritualists and mediums, especially in the late 1800's. Authors have used it to write entire novels.

Automatic writing can occur in a waking state, though the aforementioned Victorian-era mediums often put themselves into trances then used psychography to contact those who had passed over. In other uses, this writing, drawing or painting is spontaneous free association – there is no conscious awareness of content. That's what makes it perfect for sparking creativity!

Many methods exist for initiating automatic writing. Here is one exercise:

First, get settled in a quiet spot without distractions and sit comfortably with paper and pen or pencil.

Ask for the highest guidance possible. If you want specific answers, write your question at the top of the page.

Next, breathe deeply, relax and clear your mind.

Then imagine that a cord runs from the base of your spine to the earth's center. Feel the Earth's energy come up through your spine and out the crown of your head. Imagine a gold light enters your crown and flows down your body into the earth as an anchor.

Put your writing instrument to the paper and try not to consciously write anything.

Let your hand write while avoiding looking at the paper.

Be sure to give the procedure time to happen.

When automatic writing does occur, keep going until it seems complete.

Look over your paper without judgment. You may see words, pictures or symbols. Some of it may not make sense to your conscious mind.

As with any new exercise, it may take several tries for this tool to work for you. Give it a chance!

Now, a disclaimer. Because psychography comes from the subconscious, you may get disturbing results. If that occurs, or if the possibility scares you, do not attempt automatic writing. However, if you use the meditation above first, you may find your questions (if any) answered, your creativity energized and you end the session(s) with exactly what you need!

I did this once in a stress management class. I had really strange results, but I think I just couldn't get to the really let it go point. However, I did feel relaxed afterwards, which was the point of the exercise. Maybe I'll try again. Just for others, I wasn't at all afraid, and it was all good! Interesting post!
