Birmans: Carriers of Souls

Legend has it that these gentle creatures were carriers of the souls of priests. As befitted carriers, they resided in Burma Buddhist temples and were considered sacred.
In 1919, a pair of these mild-mannered felines were sent to France. Stories vary on the whys and wherefores. But regardless, they flourished. The male died on the ocean voyage but the female was already pregnant. In 1955, they were exported to England and in 1959 the United States.
These cats definitely need to be kept indoors. Their personalities are gentle and docile. They are very much people-pleasers.
These beautiful animals sport matching white 'gloves' on their front paws. The white gloves on the back hocks are called laces.
Birmans are white when they are born. They develop color-points like Siamese and Himalayans, except for their paws which remain white. Their coat takes on a golden hue.
These beauties have blue eyes that are sometimes so dark, they have a purplish cast. Their fur is silky and medium-long to long. Like the Maine Coon they have a ruff around their neck. Here's a plus for this great cat. Since they don't have an undercoat, their fur doesn't mat. Because of this, even with their long hair they only need to be brushed once a week.
Birmans are healthy and have no breed specific illnesses.
These kitties are good cats if you have children or other pets in your household. The average age for Birman's is fifteen plus years.
