Illumination vs. Carpet
In discussions about calligraphy, people often refer to carpet pages and illumination, using the term interchangeably. They actually are entirely different things. A carpet page is one similar to the top illustration from the Lindisfarne_Gospels This page resembles a carpet--hence the name. It's usually symmetric with elaborate repeating patterns and normally separates one section of a book from the next.
Strictly speaking, an illuminated page refers to those pages with gold or silver such as the bottom illustration from the Aberdeen_Bestiary. Illuminated pages might include text or elaborate capitals. But the primary consideration was the use of precious metals in the illustration.
The Book of Kells is a well known manuscript that includes both carpet pages and illumination. Check the links to enjoy some truly beautiful artwork and just imagine the hours and creativity in these beautiful pages.

Very interesting Anny! Do you ever wish you had the time to create such beautiful pieces? I suppose the monks had nothing but time. It was their job to write manuscripts and their gift to do it so beautifully. Thanks for the mini lesson!
Beautiful examples.
I enjoyed your blog - beautiful work - both the writing and the examples - thank you.
Nice!
